Abstract: | ABSTRACT
Globally, cash transfer program in refugee camps were purposed to enhance refugees’ social
well-being and social functioning thereby realizing social development. In Kakuma camp for
example, the programme intended to help refugees realize improved social welfare. However,
the programme continues to face a backlash in relation to social development dimensionsnutrition security, access to quality education, quality health care and economic stability.
This study sought to examine the relevance of the cash transfer programme on social
development among refugees in Kakuma camp, Kenya. Specific objectives were to; examine
the contribution of the cash transfer programme to nutrition security among refugees,
determine the impact of the cash transfer programme on access to quality health care,
evaluate the role of the cash transfer programme on access to quality education and to assess
the contribution of the cash transfer programme in promoting income-generating projects
among refugees. Social systems theory, resilience theory and social development model
guided the study. A mixed methods approach with a focus on convergent parallel mixedmethod design was adopted. The target population was 185,615 with a sample size of 400
participants selected using Yamane formulae and 30 refugee community leaders selected
purposively. Questionnaires, interviews and FGD were used to collect data. Quantiataive data
was analysed using SPSS while thematic content analysis was used for qualitative data.
Findings revealed a moderate and positive correlation between cash transfer programme and
nutrition security at the p. value of 0.043 with a low significant relationship between cash
transfer programme and access to quality health care at ρ-value = 0.05%, a low positive
significant correlation on access to quality education at P- = 0.034, and a weak positive and
insignificant relationship between cash transfer programme and promotion of incomegenerating projects ρ-value = 0.05. The study concluded that cash transfer programme was
moderately relevant to nutrition security with limited relevance on quality health care and
less impact on access to quality education and low on income generating projects. The study
recommended an effective implementation of strategies targeting increased cash transfer rate
to enhance social development among refugees in Kakuma camp and globally. |
