Abstract: | ABSTRACT
Emotional intelligence is the capacity to accurately perceive and understand one’s emotions and
those of others. This study investigated the relationship between emotional intelligence and
social well-being among the members of the congregation of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit in
the Catholic Diocese of Osogbo, Nigeria. The objectives were to; measure the levels of
emotional intelligence among the Daughters of the Holy Spirit in the Catholic Diocese of
Osogbo, Nigeria. Assess the levels of social well-being among the members of the Daughters of
the Holy Spirit in the Catholic Diocese of Osogbo, Nigeria; establish the relationship between
emotional intelligence and social well-being among the members of the Daughters of the Holy
Spirit in the Catholic Diocese of Osogbo, Nigeria. The study made use of two theories which are
Goleman’s emotional competency theory and Mayer and Salovey’s ability-based model. The
study employed a census sampling method and utilized 86 participants. This research adopted the
quantitative method of research, utilizing a descriptive survey design. The emotional intelligence
questionnaire by Schutte et al., (1998) and Ryff’s (1995) social well-being scale were used. Data
were analyzed using SPSS version 26 and presented in summary tables and pie charts. Pearson’s
(r) coefficient correlation analysis was used to examine the relationship between emotional
intelligence and social well-being. Findings revealed that 90.5% of the respondents had high
emotional intelligence, and 9.5% of the respondents had moderate emotional intelligence. On
social well-being, 88.1% of the participants fell under high social well-being, and 11.9% of the
participants had moderate social well-being. The study established a significant positive
relationship between emotional intelligence and social well-being among sisters of the
Congregation of Daughters of Holy Spirit in the Catholic Diocese of Osogbo, Nigeria (r
=.390**; p =.000), at the 0.01 level of significance. The study recommended similar study be
carried out focusing on the relationship between emotional intelligence and social wellbeing
among the larger members of the religious sisters in the Catholic Diocese of Osogbo, Nigeria. A
study be carried out on the relationship between emotional intelligence and social wellbeing: a
comparative study of the religious sisters and clerics of the Catholic Diocese of Osogbo, Nigeria. |
